Guidelines for Attendees

As an Attendee at Con of the North, you agree to abide by these guidelines:

  • Be courteous and polite to other attendees.
  • Show up for your events. If you decide to not attend an event, return the ticket to the Registration desk so other attendees can use it.
  • Similarly, don't take event tickets you aren't going to use.
  • Weapons, whether real or fake, are not allowed in the convention areas.
  • Parents, you are still responsible for your children while they are at the convention.
  • Be kind to yourself and your fellow attendees: practice good personal hygiene during the convention weekend.
  • Do not do anything illegal at the convention. Any illegal activities will be reported to the authorities.
  • Don't drink and game: alcohol is not allowed in the convention areas.
  • Most importantly, have fun!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am new to the con. Can you explain how it works?

A: Here's a general outline of how it all works, see the timeline to verify this year's actual deadlines:

  • Summer (around July): preregistration opens and you can send in your registration fee; Judges and Referees can send in game submissions for games they want to run (see the Judging page for more info).
  • Labor Day: Deadline for games to be included in the events book. Also deadline for Judges to receive a preregistration premium ($5 off or a t-shirt).
  • Mid-November: Events book mailed; events list online. Event requests can now be accepted for pre-registered Judges and Players. New preregistrations with event requests also happily accepted!
  • January 5: Deadline for preregistration. At this time preregistration and event request submission ends. Registration at the door (onsite at the convention) will be available as well starting the first day of the con.
  • Early February: Event tickets are pulled for players based on preregistration order.
  • Starting Friday of the Convention: preregistration packets including event tickets may be picked up at the registration desk. Onsite registration begins. Remaining event tickets made available (day by day) for players to select from on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Q: What can I do to help ensure that my preregistration form and event selections are processed quickly and correctly?

A: Type or clearly print with a pen. Fill out all the fields on the registration form. Don't forget to include your payment. We are trying to use email for most registration communications now, so if you are comfortable doing so, please include an email address where we can reach you. For event requests, please be sure to include the day/time slot AND event title. If you have more than one choice during a particular time slot, please clearly indicate your preference in order. We have lots of volunteers helping process event requests, so the clearer and more legible you make it, the better.

Q: I want to run a game at the con. Do I have to pre-register also? When is the deadline?

A: Yes, you have to pre-register either as a Judge or a Referee. See the Judging page for more information. Please note the deadline for inclusion of your games in our events book. We offer a premium incentive for Judges to submit their preregistration forms and game submissions by the events book deadline; once that deadline has passed, the premium is no longer available.

Q: I submitted my preregistration. When do I receive a confirmation that you have processed it?

A: It can take a few weeks to process registrations. Our registration staff are all volunteers donating our spare time to help make the con run, and it can simply take a bit before registration forms are handed off to data entry volunteers and processed. In general, we do not send out confirmations of your preregistration. However, if you pre-register prior to the reminder postcard we send out in December, your postcard will be marked "Thank you for Pre-Registering!"

Q: I don't remember if I pre-registered for the con this year. How can I find out?

A: Email info@conofthenorth.org and one of our registration volunteers will get back to you.

Q: I sent my preregistration in by mail with a check and my check has not been cashed yet. Does this mean something is wrong?

A: In general, no, nothing is wrong. We may have one volunteer pick up the mail and pass it along to another volunteer for processing who then passes checks along to another volunteer for deposit in the bank. Sometimes this “relay race” can take a few weeks. We do try to get checks deposited in a timely fashion, but again it can take up to a month. If it has been longer than that, and you are concerned, please email info@conofthenorth.org and one of our registration volunteers will get back to you.

Q: I pre-registered before the events book was published. How do I submit event requests now?

A: You can submit them by filling out another preregistration form, either online or by mail. Simply check the box indicating “Already Registered” and our registration volunteers will match your game requests to your previously submitted preregistration form.

Q: Can I request tickets for more than one event in a time slot, in case my first choice is already full?

A: Sure! However, in order for us to best process a list like this, you should indicate your preferences clearly (i.e. First Alternate, Second Alternate, etc.). We have many volunteers who help out when we pull event tickets, and the clearer, more legible, and more easily understood your list is, the better. An ideal list would be ordered by day (Friday, then Saturday, then Sunday) and within day by time slot (10-12, then 14-18, etc.), and within time slot by preference.

Q: How do you decide who gets their event requests first?

A: Event tickets are distributed based on preregistration date, from earliest preregistration to latest. This means someone who pre-registers in August will have their event requests filled before someone who pre-registers in November. We base preregistration date on the paid date. In the case of PayPal, that means the date the money is released to us (usually within 1-5 business days depending on how you pay), and with checks, we base the date on the postmark date on which they were mailed out.

Q: How do I know if I got into the games I requested? When will I get my game tickets?

A: You will receive the event tickets for the games you got into when you pick up your registration packet at the convention. Our desk usually opens a bit before gaming starts on Friday.

Q: How can I increase my chances of getting the game tickets I want?

A: Pre-register early! Game tickets are pulled in the order payment is received. All tickets are pulled at once a few weeks prior to the convention, but people who pre-register in August will have their tickets pulled before people who pre-register in November.

Q: I made a mistake when I submitted my event requests. How can I fix it?

A: If you have a number of changes, the best thing to do is submit a new events request/preregistration form and indicate on the form that it should replace the earlier one you submitted. If you just have a change or two, you can email info@conofthenorth.org with your changes, and one of our registration volunteers will make the changes on your form.

Q: Does the preregistration deadline of January 5th mean you have to receive my mailed form by that date, or does it just have to be postmarked January 5th?

A: It just needs to be postmarked by January 5th.

Q: I think Con of the North has the wrong address for me. How do I fix it?

A: Email info@conofthenorth.org and one of our registration volunteers can fix your information in the system. It is quick and easy and will ensure you receive all our convention materials in the mail!

Q: I have a question about the Rogue Trader Tournament.

A: See the Terrain Specialties CotN RTT FAQ for a FAQ specific to the tournament. Please read the FAQ first. If you have a question that's not answered in the FAQ, please join that forum and post them under the Con Of The North yyyy forum (where yyyy is the year of the convention). Q: I pre-registered for the con, but now I can't attend. What do I do?

A: As long as it is prior to the Friday of the convention, you can contact us at info@conofthenorth.org and we will do our best to assist you with a refund or transfer of registration.

Q: I have a question that has not been answered here. Help!

A: Probably the best way to get some help is to email us at info@conofthenorth.org and one of our volunteers will respond as soon as possible. If you have a question about non-registration information (such as being a vendor, running games, volunteering, or the convention in general), please check out the other pages on our site by following navigation links on the left. You can also contact us via info@conofthenorth.org, or locate the volunteer in charge of that department and contact them directly.
